Aging and Longevity*

Many factors can affect a person’s lifespan. One of those factors is oxidative stress, which can produce harmful free radicals, contributing to inflammation and nerve cell damage*. Antioxidants in some mushrooms, such as ergothioneine and selenium, can neutralize these free radicals, reducing inflammation and protecting the brain and nerves*.

Numerous neurodegenerative diseases are associated with aging. These occur when nerve cells in the brain or peripheral nervous system lose function over time and ultimately die. Although certain treatments may help relieve some of the physical or mental symptoms associated with neurodegenerative diseases, no cures exist*.

Some mushrooms contain compounds that exhibit neuroprotective properties. For example, studies have shown that Lion's Mane stimulates the production of nerve growth factors (NGFs) in the brain*. NGFs are essential for the growth, maintenance, and repair of nerve cells. By promoting NGF production, Lion's Mane may be able to enhance cognitive function, improve memory, and support nerve regeneration*.

Ongoing Areas of Research

1. Age-related Diseases*

Certain mushroom species, such as Ganoderma and Cordyceps have long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for their potential anti-aging effects**. These mushrooms contain bioactive compounds* that may protect against age-related neurodegenerative diseases*, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's*. They may also enhance cognitive function, improve memory, and promote overall brain health.

2. Brain And Nerve Function*

Mushrooms contain nutrients that can support optimal brain function. They are a good source of B-vitamins, including riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid*, which studies have connected with the production of neurotransmitters and helping maintain a healthy nervous system*. Additionally, mushrooms contain minerals like copper and potassium*, which are required for proper brain function and nerve impulse transmission**.

3. Anti-Cancer Potential*

Well-studied and used in Japan, China, and South Korea, some mushrooms such as Turkey Tail have been found to possess anti-tumor properties and may be beneficial in cancer treatment.**
